Niklas Möller: Embodied Technology and Creating Moving Conversations #15

SHOW NOTES

In today’s episode I’m talking with Niklas Möller. Niklas Möller is a multidisciplinary artist who combines interaction design with participatory art. His interest lies in how modern technology can help create new possibilities in inventing, experiencing and distributing participatory artforms (such as games and interactive theatre). As a director he seeks to develop other people's creativity and create new possibilities for collaboration through the means of technology. Niklas Möller is the artistic director of A New Tree Grows, which was made in collaboration with the writer Carolina Nilsson, the composer August Norborg and the 3D-artist Emal Ghouse. You can check the link to this beautiful interactive movie here.

We talk about the power of ritual in theatre, embodied technology, and how art allows us to communicate experiences that can’t be transmitted by words and have conversations that otherwise we wouldn’t be able to. Niklas’s work makes a bridge between art and technology, which expands the power of art, and creates a language that speaks directly to our hearts.

As you’re going hear, I’m totally in love with “A New Tree Grows” and experiencing it, even helped me go through a sleepless night, without getting grumpy, but instead feeling supported by its incredible beauty and generosity.

As Niklas said:

The bigger reason behind what I do is moving people - transmitting something that doesn’t necessarily can be communicated by words, speech or text, and that needs another medium for transmission. And that generates a conversation about things, that without that art, we wouldn’t be able not have.

We’re also talking about…

  • How technology can be used as a concrete tool, a real craft to realise your artistic vision.

  • Niklas’s journey as a creator and an artistic director.

  • The main challenges we all encounter as a new theatre professional.

  • The new creative possibilities that are generated from the intersection between theatre and new technologies.

  • How art can help technology to become more humane.

  • How iteration can make your process as a creator grow more naturally and efficiently.
