Mastering Art & Impact: Kazuo Ohno #30

SHOW NOTES

In today’s episode we start a 3-part series called 3 Masters on Art & Impact, where I get to share with you the work and my experience with 3 amazing artists and masters, who profoundly affected my life, how I create theatre and understand the power of art in the world today.

Today we’re talking about my first master, Kazuo Ohno.

Kazuo Ohno was a Japanese dancer and one of the founding creators of a contemporary dance form called Butoh. Butoh incorporated elements of existentialism, surrealism, German expressionism, kabuki theatre and it was a reaction to the horrors of the second world war.

Ohno once said of his work: "The best thing someone can say to me is that while watching my performance they began to cry. It is not important to understand what I am doing; perhaps it is better if they don't understand, but just respond to the dance."
